Child welfare services are designated and regulated under the Ontario Child and Family Services Act as "children's aid societies." In the districts of Sudbury and Manitoulin, the Children's Aid Society of the Districts of Sudbury and Manitoulin is obligated and exclusively responsible for investigating where children are in need of protection from abuse or neglect, and for the adoption of crown wards. The Society must respond and provide services on a 24-hour basis, 365 days a year.
The Sudbury Society traces its origins back to 1907. The Manitoulin Society was established in 1922. Formal amalgamation of the two agencies occurred in 1971. |
